About This Collection
Ajrakh Print Sarees — Heritage From Ajrakhpur to Your Wardrobe
Ajrakh isn't just a print. It's a 400-year-old craft from a small village called Ajrakhpur in the Kutch region of Gujarat, where artisans of the Khatri community still hand-carve wooden blocks, mix natural dyes from indigo and madder root, and print fabric the way their great-grandfathers did. In 2023, the Government of India awarded Kutch Ajrakh a Geographical Indication (GI) tag — a legal recognition that real Ajrakh can only come from this region, made this way. At Rang Rajasthani, our Ajrakh print saree collection brings you curated, modern pieces of this heritage craft — featuring the latest designs the karigars of Kutch are working on right now.
What Makes Ajrakh Print Different From Any Other Print
Most "block-printed" sarees you'll see online are machine prints made to look traditional. Real Ajrakh is something else entirely. The fabric goes through a 16-stage process — washed in river water, soaked in natural mordants, hand-printed with carved wooden blocks one motif at a time, dipped in indigo vats, sun-dried, washed again, printed again. The signature colors come from the earth itself: deep indigo from fermented indigo leaves, brick red from madder root, black from iron, yellow from turmeric and pomegranate. The motifs are symmetrical, geometric, often floral — and they appear on both sides of the fabric, which is the hallmark of a true Ajrakh.
Modal Silk — The Fabric That Makes Ajrakh Drape Like a Dream
Ajrakh has traditionally been printed on cotton, and we carry those too. But our hero fabric in this collection is Pure Modal Silk. Modal is a soft, breathable, naturally derived fiber that takes the Ajrakh dye beautifully — the colors come out richer, the drape falls fluidly, and the saree feels luxurious without being heavy. Pure Modal Silk Ajrakh sarees work for office wear, casual festive lunches, family functions, and dressier evenings depending on how you style them. We also stock a few special pieces on Pure Gajji Silk for ceremony-grade Ajrakh — heavier, glossier, and built for wedding guest occasions.
Lakdi Patta Pallu — The Detail That Sets Our Edit Apart
Look closely at most Ajrakh sarees and the pallu is just a continuation of the body print. In our collection, we've chosen pieces where the pallu carries something extra: a woven zari border known as Lakdi Patta, a traditional weaving technique that adds a structured, dressy finish to an otherwise relaxed handcrafted saree. It's a small detail, but it transforms an everyday Ajrakh into something you can confidently wear to a wedding guest event or a family festive evening. A few of our pieces also feature hand-applied Gota Patti work — adding a touch of Rajasthani festive richness over the Gujarat-born print. East-meets-west of Indian craft, on a single drape.
Who Ajrakh Sarees Are For
Ajrakh sarees are for the woman who looks at a saree and wants to know its story. Who chooses earthy indigos and maroons over loud sequins. Who appreciates craft for the hours of human work behind it, not just the finished surface. Our buyers wear Ajrakh to work-from-home days that need confidence, to art gallery openings, to casual office Fridays, to family festive gatherings, and yes — to weddings, when they want to look distinctly different from everyone in shiny embroidery. It's the saree that signals taste, not occasion.
Why Buy Ajrakh Print Sarees from Rang Rajasthani
We source directly from Kutch and pick deliberately. Every Ajrakh in our edit has been chosen for color depth, print clarity, drape, and that something-extra detail — whether it's a Lakdi Patta pallu, a Gota Patti hand-work touch, or a rare color combination. Our prices stay honest because we keep our supply chain short. And as our customers introduce us to more occasion needs, we'll keep growing this collection with pieces that earn their place — never with bulk fillers.
