About This Collection
Gota Patti Sarees — Rang Rajasthani
There is a moment in every Rajasthani wedding when the light catches the gold on a saree and everything else in the room fades. That moment belongs to Gota Patti.
This centuries-old craft originated in the royal courts of Rajasthan — in the palaces of Jaipur, Udaipur, and Jodhpur — where it was first created to adorn the garments of queens, nobles, and temple idols. The name itself says it precisely: "Gota" means the metallic ribbon, and "Patti" means the strip or leaf it is cut and folded into. Together, they create an embroidery that looks like jewellery sewn into fabric.
The Craft — What Gota Patti Actually Is
Gota Patti is an appliqué technique — metallic ribbons are hand-cut, shaped into motifs, and stitched directly onto the fabric. At Rang Rajasthani, our collection includes two distinct types of Gota work:
Gota Patti — the traditional form where the ribbon is cut and folded into geometric and floral shapes, most commonly the iconic rhomboid "patti" leaf, and stitched by hand to create structured, detailed patterns.
Kache Gote (Ribbon Work) — a lighter, more fluid style where the metallic ribbon is applied in flowing lines and borders rather than folded motifs, creating a delicate, almost lace-like effect on the fabric.
Both forms are done entirely by hand. The artisan first traces the design onto the fabric using a perforated paper pattern called a "khaaka", then stitches each piece of gota individually — a process known as "takayi". A single saree can take several days to complete.
Traditionally, the gota ribbon was woven with real gold and silver wire — making it exclusive to royalty. Over time, artisans moved to copper-coated silver and later to zari and metallic polyester, making the craft accessible while preserving its ceremonial beauty.
Fabrics in Our Gota Patti Collection
The gota ribbon responds differently to every fabric it rests on. In our collection at Rang Rajasthani, Gota Patti sarees are available in Pure Gajji Silk for the richest ceremonial drape, Pure Tissue Silk for luminous reception wear, Pure Russian Silk for structured elegance, Pure Chiffon for lightweight festive grace, Pure Modal Silk for a soft refined finish, and Pure Upada Silk for a delicate yet rich texture.
When to Wear Gota Patti Sarees
In Rajasthan, Gota Patti is not worn casually — it is reserved for moments that matter. Our collection covers the full range of these occasions:
Bridal and wedding ceremonies — Gharchola Gota Patti sarees in Gajji Silk are among the most auspicious choices for the bride's family and close relatives at the main ceremony.
Teej and Karwa Chauth — these festivals are practically defined by the gold shimmer of Gota Patti. Chiffon and Russian Silk Gota sarees are the most popular choices for these occasions.
Mayra Ceremony — a significant Rajasthani pre-wedding ritual where Gota Patti sarees hold traditional importance.
Mehendi, Sangeet, and Reception — different fabrics and gota intensities suit each function's mood and formality.
Price Range
Our Gota Patti sarees are available from ₹1,950 to ₹19,300 — covering every budget from festive occasion wear to heirloom-quality ceremonial pieces.
