About This Collection

Mayra Ceremony Sarees — For the Most Emotional Ritual in a Rajasthani Wedding

Mayra is the day the maternal family arrives. Days before the wedding, the bride's mama, mami, and the entire maternal side travel to the bride's home with gifts, blessings, and the most important offering of all — Mama Chundi, the ceremonial Bandhani saree gifted to the bride by her maternal uncle. In a deeper layer of the tradition, the mamas also gift a premium chundi to their own sister — the bride's mother — usually a Pure Ojariya or Pure Gajji Silk with Gota Patti or Zardozi handwork. Each guest is welcomed individually onto a lakdi ki bajot, where the pandit-ji performs proper tilak and puja with full vidhi-vidhan. It is one of the most emotionally charged moments of a Rajasthani wedding. At Rang Rajasthani, we've built this collection around exactly that — the sarees this ceremony has always demanded, in the fabrics it traditionally honors.

Why Pure Ojariya and Pure Gajji Silk Dominate This Collection

If you've attended a Mayra in a Marwari or Rajasthani family, you've seen these two fabrics on almost every senior woman in the room. Pure Ojariya is a soft, lustrous traditional silk weave — the heritage choice for the bride's mother, mamis, and senior maternal women, often paired with intricate Bandhani in rani pink, purple, or red. Pure Gajji Silk is the heavier ceremonial silk — the fabric of Gharchola, of Mayra chundis with heavy Gota Patti and Hand Embellishment, of the most photographed sarees in the ritual. Together, these two fabrics anchor our Mayra collection — but because every guest at a Mayra needs to feel dressed for the moment, we've also included Pure Russian Silk, Pure Modal Silk, Pure Chiffon, Khaddi Georgette, Viscose Georgette, and select Synthetic options.

Chundi, Bandhani, Gota Patti — The Crafts of Mayra

The Mayra saree has a visual language. Bandhani tie-dye dots are the soul of Mama Chundi — small, dense, vibrant, traditionally in red, rani pink, maroon, or yellow on rich silk bases. Gota Patti hand work adds the Rajasthani festive richness that makes the chundi feel ceremonial enough for the maternal women being honored. Hand Embellishment — beadwork, stonework, premium thread embroidery — appears on the heavier Gajji Silk pieces meant for the closest family. Banarasi Zari Weave and Zari Embroidery show up on the lighter Russian Silk and Georgette pieces — ceremony-ready without the heaviest price point. Multi-craft pieces layering Bandhani + Gota + Hand Embellishment are typical for the bride's mother's chundi and the senior mami sarees.

Sarees for Every Guest at a Mayra

A Mayra ceremony is a family affair — every female guest dresses in chundi-style sarees, not just the bride's immediate family. That's why our Mayra collection deliberately spans a wide price range. Premium pieces (₹15,000–₹19,300+) — Pure Gajji Silk with Gharchola + Bandhani + Gota Patti + Hand Embellishment, meant for the bride's mother, the mama's wife (mami), bua, and senior maternal women. Mid-premium (₹5,700–₹8,000) — Pure Ojariya Bandhani and Pure Modal Silk Gota Patti pieces for sisters, cousins, and close maternal family. Mid-range (₹2,950–₹4,700) — Pure Russian Silk Bandhani for younger guests and extended family. Budget-friendly (₹1,600–₹2,500) — Synthetic Bandhani pieces in classic chundi colors, so every cousin and guest finds something to wear with dignity. This is the only saree collection in our store deliberately stratified by guest role.

FAQ for This Collection

Q1. What is the Mayra ceremony?

Mayra is a deeply emotional pre-wedding ritual in Rajasthani and Marwari weddings, where the bride's maternal family — led by her mama (uncle) — arrives at her home a few days before the wedding with gifts, blessings, and ceremonial offerings. The centerpiece offering is Mama Chundi, a Bandhani saree gifted to the bride by her maternal uncle. The mamas also collectively gift a premium chundi to the bride's mother (their sister). Each maternal guest is welcomed onto a lakdi ki bajot (wooden seat), where a pandit-ji performs proper tilak and puja. It is a major social moment that honors the maternal family's love and support for the bride.

Q2. What is "Mama Chundi" and why does it matter at Mayra?

Mama Chundi is the ceremonial Bandhani saree that the bride's maternal uncle (mama) presents to her at the Mayra ceremony. It traditionally comes in rich Bandhani prints on premium fabrics like Pure Ojariya, Pure Gajji Silk, or Pure Russian Silk, often with Gota Patti, Zardozi, or Hand Embellishment work added. The chundi symbolizes the maternal family's blessings and love. A similar premium chundi is also gifted to the bride's mother by her brothers — making Mayra one of the rare wedding rituals that honors both the bride and her mother together.

Q3. What fabrics are most preferred for Mayra ceremony sarees?

The traditional preferred fabrics for Mayra are Pure Ojariya (soft heritage silk weave, ideal for the bride's mother and senior maternal women) and Pure Gajji Silk (heavy ceremonial silk, ideal for chundis with Gharchola, heavy Bandhani, and Gota Patti work). For the broader guest list, Pure Russian Silk, Pure Modal Silk, Pure Chiffon, and Khaddi Georgette Bandhani sarees work beautifully — lighter to wear but still chundi-style and ceremony-appropriate. Our collection covers all these fabric tiers because a Mayra has guests at every relationship and budget level.

Q4. Who attends a Mayra ceremony and who needs a saree?

Mayra is attended by the entire maternal family of the bride — the mama and mami (uncle and aunt), the bride's mother (the mama's sister), the bride's bua (paternal aunt) and other senior women, cousins, sisters, and extended maternal relatives. Almost every female guest wears a chundi-style Bandhani saree for the occasion. The most ceremonial pieces are reserved for the bride's mother and senior mamis; mid-range pieces work for sisters and close cousins; lighter budget options work for younger and extended relatives. Our collection is deliberately built to serve every guest role.

Q5. What colors are traditional for Mayra sarees?

Mayra colors lean into the rich auspicious palette: Rani Pink, Red, Maroon, Purple dominate, with Yellow, Burgundy, Cream, and Firozi (deep blue-green) also commonly worn. Bandhani patterns in these colors carry strong cultural significance — red and maroon symbolize marital blessings, rani pink and purple signal celebration, yellow honors auspiciousness, cream is reserved for elder women and softer ceremonial dressing. You'll find all these color stories across the fabric tiers in our collection.

Q6. Can a Mayra saree be reworn for other occasions?

Yes — beautifully. A Mayra chundi-style Bandhani saree works wonderfully for family functions, Karwa Chauth, festive celebrations, Diwali gatherings, and other family weddings as a guest. The heavier Pure Gajji Silk Gharchola + Bandhani pieces from a Mayra often become heirloom sarees, passed down to daughters and granddaughters. Lighter Russian Silk and Georgette Bandhani pieces from the collection move easily into broader festive wear. The traditional richness of Mayra sarees gives them long wardrobe life beyond just the wedding day.
